A pleasant partner to rest with. You acknowledge each other's good taste and care for each other. But an argument once begun, neither ends.
ESFP × ISTP is the Illusionary relation, one of the sixteen. Time with no need to hurry is there.
Written as ISTP × ESFP it is the same pair. In 16Personalities terms, the Entertainer and the Virtuoso.
Both sensory types, strategists, optimistic, stubborn, ambitious. You acknowledge each other's good taste and enjoy caring for the other. Each shows their best self and plays a role, making a false compatibility.
In terms of the mechanism, ESFP's second position, "ethics of distance between people", lands in ISTP's sixth; ISTP's second, "practical logic", lands in ESFP's sixth. The sixth is a place you produce with a little effort, and it feels good when the other fills it lightly. The ease of resting together comes from this way of entering.
Shared aesthetic interests and real plans support these two.
An argument once begun, neither yields the last word.
ISTP's subjective sensory space collides with ESFP's desire to control the surrounding space and objects. ISTP tries to impose refined standards of taste; ESFP sees that as domination and resists. Both refuse subordination, and affectation and pride create irritation.
But the first position does not reach. ESFP's "force that pushes and takes" is ISTP's seventh, which they let pass; ISTP's "sensing that arranges comfort" sits in the same place for ESFP. What the other values most, you know, and make light of. And the "intuition that calculates ahead" ESFP wants most is ISTP's third; the "eye that opens possibilities" ISTP wants is ESFP's third. It comes when asked, and does not last. Good as a place to rest, thin as a place to lean on. That is the shape of the illusionary relation.
ISTP keeps dignity with small deceptions and feigned simplicity; ESFP hears mockery in that tone and loses confidence. ISTP scatters ESFP's energy across several plans and manipulates with promises of time and strategic absence. ESFP feigns weakness and creates jealousy to counter.
Collision, emotional reconciliation, new hope, collision again. A bond on the side of the soul prevents complete indifference, and distance reduces friction.
Good taste.
It sounds like mockery.
They wave off your appeals.
Glamorous, and caring.
They want to dominate the space.
They feign weakness.
A film example. A woman misread a man's restraint as indifference; both tried to get on top, collided, and parted still misunderstanding, the record says.
A film example. A widow depended on the other; emotional manipulation hid plunder; the moment the promise proved an illusion it became tragedy, the record says.
Once an argument begins, neither yields the last word, and collision, reconciliation and hope become a cycle, the observation says.
Mick Jagger (SEE) × Keith Richards (SLI)
Typing: both types agree across several published sources
Two men in the same band for more than half a century. Richards openly mocked Jagger in his memoir, and Jagger did not speak to him for a long time. Collision and reconciliation repeated, and still they did not break up.
What matches: both refusing subordination; mockery and pride; cyclical collision and reconciliation; a bond on the side of the soul preventing indifference.
