Two people who share a head for gain. A business can be built. But you test each other's feelings like machines.
INTP × ISTP is the Business relation, one of the sixteen. Few words, and still it moves forward.
Written as ISTP × INTP it is the same pair. In 16Personalities terms, the Logician and the Virtuoso.
You run practical matters with the same tool. You share a creative head for gain and a merchant's mind, and in negotiations with outsiders both are good at pretence and steering. You exchange methods, experience and knowledge.
In terms of the mechanism, the two share the second position, "practical logic". The tool is the same, so talk of work is fast. But the first position differs. INTP's "intuition that calculates ahead" is ISTP's third position, something they can produce if asked but do not lead with, and ISTP's "sensing that arranges comfort" sits in the same place for INTP. Each measures the other's strength by their own "I could if I had to". So respect and wariness appear at the same time.
The understanding that time spent on grievances reduces profit reconciles the two.
Experimenting on the other's reactions with a coldness dressed as indifference.
Both stubborn introverts, weak in handling feeling. In joint work you suddenly grow irritated and resentful. Blaming the other for being dishonest first, retaliating, asking "who cheated first".
The empty places coincide. "Emotion that moves the room" is the most painful place for both, and neither can supply it for the other. What each wants most differs. INTP is waiting for "force that pushes and takes"; ISTP for "eye that opens possibilities"; and the other has neither in first position. The work runs; the warmth of daily life comes from no one. That is the shape of the business relation.
INTP's pessimistic forecasts collide with ISTP's optimistic expansion. ISTP's casual handling of time and space irritates INTP's precautions. ISTP's mockery angers INTP's sense of respect.
The observation describes manipulations of time: arriving late to show indifference, early to show control. Even marriage is treated like a business contract with negotiated clauses of freedom and non-interference.
They understand gain. You can team up.
They handle time as they please.
They mock.
They calculate ahead.
"Nothing will work out", they say.
They test you with coldness.
A literary example: a doctor and an officer who philosophised cynically together and enjoyed each other's deceptions. After the officer engineered a duel, the doctor changed from accomplice to critical observer and kept his distance, the record says.
A film example. An elderly bachelor and a critical woman competed in coldness in a courtship, experimenting on each other's feelings. He left; she, keeping the advantage, allowed it with relief, the record says.
Arriving late to show indifference, arriving early to show control. Manipulating time becomes a tool of the game, the observation says.
Dr Werner (ILI) × Pechorin (SLI)
Typing: fictional characters (Lermontov, A Hero of Our Time; per the source)
Two who philosophised cynically together and enjoyed each other's deceptions as an intellectual game. After Pechorin engineered a duel, Werner changed from accomplice to critical observer and kept his distance.
What matches: teaming up on gain and cynicism; the experiment on feelings ending in distance.
