Two people who share the tool of pushing by force. It runs if the roles at work are clear. But sparks fly between hierarchy and equality.
ISTJ × ISFJ is the Business relation, one of the sixteen. Few words, and still it moves forward.
Written as ISFJ × ISTJ it is the same pair. In 16Personalities terms, the Logistician and the Defender.
You push with the same tool. In a work setting where roles are clear and feeling is neutral, these two run. ISTJ shows respect only to those who resist by force. ISFJ keeps a position of principle regardless of punishment.
In terms of the mechanism, the two share the second position, "force that pushes through". The tool is the same, so talk of work is fast. But the first position differs. ISTJ's "logic that builds order" is ISFJ's third position, something they can produce if asked but do not lead with, and ISFJ's "ethics of distance between people" sits in the same place for ISTJ. Each measures the other's strength by their own "I could if I had to". So respect and wariness appear at the same time.
At first each appears to the other as serious and capable.
The logic of hierarchy and the ethics of equality.
ISTJ demands hierarchical obedience; ISFJ demands democratic equality. ISTJ sees obedience as weakness; ISFJ sees it as a temporary retreat. ISTJ uses corporal punishment to train the will; ISFJ sees it as evil and resists.
The empty places coincide. "Eye that opens possibilities" is the most painful place for both, and neither can supply it for the other. What each wants most differs. ISTJ is waiting for "emotion that moves the room"; ISFJ for "practical logic"; and the other has neither in first position. The work runs; the warmth of daily life comes from no one. That is the shape of the business relation.
The observation says "two static values constantly collide, and sparks fly in all directions".
On the other hand, there are cases where, after ISFJ resisted by force, ISTJ came to comply. The relationship between these two changes after a direct confrontation.
Serious, with principles.
They do not comply.
They resist. Then you have no choice but to acknowledge them.
Capable, orderly.
They demand hierarchy.
They use force. You resist that.
A recorded case of an ISTJ father reading his daughter's letter, beating her with a belt when she refused to rewrite it, and the ISFJ mother at once having a conversation teaching forgiveness.
A thirteen-year-old daughter stepped between her father's violence and her mother and grabbed his raised arm. From then on the father stopped dominating the daughter and began to yield, the record says.
After the daughter learned to restrain the father, the mother held the daughter's arm during an outburst and prevented it. A case of the ethics of forgiveness preventing resistance.
Dwight Eisenhower (LSI) × George Marshall (ESI)
Typing: both types agree across several published sources
The chief of staff and the general he promoted. In the military setting with clear roles, their relationship ran for a long time. Marshall avoided personal closeness; Eisenhower kept to the hierarchy. Consistent with the observation that these two run in a work setting where feeling is neutral.
What matches: running when roles are clear and feeling is neutral.
