Mood and handiwork. You can see what the other is waiting for, yet the one who moves feeling and the one who fixes things cannot sit at the same workbench.
INFP × ISTP is the Super-ego relation, one of the sixteen. It continues calmly because you do not come close.
Written as ISTP × INFP it is the same pair. In 16Personalities terms, the Mediator and the Virtuoso.
INFP reads the flow and moves the mood of a room. ISTP arranges bodily comfort and cuts waste in practical matters. To INFP, ISTP is someone doing with ease what INFP strains to do: working with the hands. To ISTP, INFP is someone doing with ease what ISTP strains to do: creating a mood.
In terms of positions, the "intuition that reads the flow" INFP does as naturally as breathing is, for ISTP, the third position, where they strain out of duty. ISTP's "sensing that arranges comfort" is likewise in INFP's third. That is, each shows the other, unaffectedly, the very thing the other is stretching to reach. That is the true nature of the superego relation's "respect", and at the same time of its "envy".
In the old observations, superego is the relation in which the strongest area of one's ego is, for the other, an area of pangs of conscience and lack of confidence. You understand the other's motives well, yet means and values differ too much for it to become competition.
Theatre and coldness become each other's complaint.
Up close, INFP's way of moving feeling touches ISTP's sore spot, and ISTP's practical remarks touch INFP's. INFP's mood looks like theatre to ISTP; ISTP's remarks look like coldness to INFP.
The second position's tool strikes the other's fourth. INFP's "emotion that moves the room" is ISTP's untouchable place; ISTP's "practical logic" is INFP's. The better the other does it, the more you shrink. So doing the same task side by side collapses, and dividing the task leaves only respect.
The observation says: seeing the other as a distant ideal, while conversation turns formal without a shared topic.
It lasts as mentor and pupil at a distance, or in the form of advice and support.
Their hands move with ease.
Cold.
They strike the sore spot with practical matters.
They create a mood with ease.
It looks like theatre.
They strike the sore spot with feeling.
Lives are entirely different, so you can contribute to each other in the form of advice and support out of the difference in experience. A relation without conflict, often comfortable, superficial yet reliable. Cross-exchange rarely occurs: Augustinavičiūtė's observation.
Without a shared topic the conversation turns formal, and each states their own view rather than listening. There is an impression of being understood, yet each suspects the understanding is shallow, the observation says.
The other embodies with ease what you secretly want and fear. An automatic, irrepressible jealousy arises here. Even with psychological skill, the other's role can be played only temporarily, the observation says.
Tchaikovsky (IEI) × Rachmaninoff (SLI)
Typing: both types agree across several published sources
The older composer praised the work of the young composer, then a student, and gave him opportunities for performance. They did not live close, did not compose together, and continued in the form of advice and support. The older man's death left a long effect on the younger.
What matches: lasting in the form of mentor and pupil at a distance, and advice.
