Half a sentence, and it gets through. Someone who fixes the same things with the same quiet. But with two people's worth of quiet, the conversation stops.
ISTP × ISTP is the Identity relation, one of the sixteen. Half a sentence, and it gets through.
Written as ISTP × ISTP it is the same pair. In 16Personalities terms, the Virtuoso and the Virtuoso.
The same handiwork, the same sense of distance, the same reticence. You can sit side by side without explanation. It is also a chance to see yourself with the eyes of the same type.
In terms of the mechanism, the "sensing that arranges comfort" in ISTP's first position and the "practical logic" in the second sit in exactly the same positions in the other. The view you are best at, the other is best at too. So no explanation is needed, and so no new perspective comes from the other either. The strong places overlap, and do not double.
In the old observations, in identity the same elements of both act in the same positions, and a complete, painless repulsion arises. Since no words are needed, there is also nothing the other can hand you. For these two, emotional fire and future possibilities are absent on both sides.
The observation says the conversation between these two is loose, without feeling, and gradually monotonous. Both lower their emotional expression together and cool each other.
Where identity is most useful is in learning. If a senior of the same type has walked the same road ahead of you, their experience can be used as it is. The observations too say repeatedly that it lasts long as mentor and pupil or with a difference in age. Only when two equal ISTPs do the same thing in the same place does the repulsion described above arise.
Two people's worth of quiet becomes silence.
When the subtypes do not match, distrust and tension rise and the other's behaviour looks unnatural. Each feels the other is fake, rejects them, and they drift apart.
The empty places are the same too. The "ethics of people" ISTP wants most is what the other wants most, and neither has it. The "eye that opens possibilities", which each produces with a little effort, takes a little effort from both. What flows in silently between duals never flowed between these two in the first place.
Even in close friendship there is distance. Becoming lovers is rare, and marriages are short. Both are unconsciously looking for an expressive, spontaneous partner.
There is a good side. Seeing yourself with the eyes of the same type, you can evaluate your strengths and weaknesses objectively. You resonate with books by writers of the same type.
